I'd Like A Word

Here are some of the pages from yesterday with the word balloons added. I'll have to keep the sketchy-pencil look beacuse I am rapidly running out of time and if I want to make the March 31st deadline, I won't have time to ink and polish these pages. It's not a big deal though. The pencils give you a good idea of what's happening.

The Vellum Pages

Typically I pencil (and ink) all of my pages on smooth bristol board but I ran out earlier this week and the only thing I had laying around the shop was a few blank pages of vellum bristol board that I bought by accident several months ago. The difference between the two boards is that one has tooth and the other is almost glossy. The more tooth (or grit) a paper has the more it "grabs" the pencil creating (in my experience) a sketchier looking line.

Anyway, I knew it would be a good experience for me to change things up a bit, even if it really is a small bit. I doubt there will be much noticeable difference in the finished product but creating the pages was that much more interesting. The pencils aren't finished quite yet but they'll do for today's post.

Warm Up's

It's cold this morning, even for February. My morning routine, which includes waking up increasingly later and later these days is to get up, shut off my annoying phone alarm. Bailey barely lifts his head up when I walk past to the bathroom, brush my teeth, dress (often in the same thing I wore the day before) and head out the door. At this point Bails will actually wake up, stretch and following me trotting out the front door.

I don't use a leash with him. I haven't in months. Years even. Bailey turned three this September. He comes when I call him, hops into the back of my Jeep (seats down) and more often than not curls up again for the long drive to work. On a morning like this in the frost and the days-old crunchy snow, I'm glad I have a remote start. It's a small pleasure getting into a warm car on a cold morning.

We listen to a February CD, sad and emo-heavy. I stop at the Starbucks in Marshfield as usual to get my coffee and Matt's. I've taken to drinking Americano's now. I'll probably be drinking something else in a month or two because honestly I think it's kind of creepy that the Starbucks people will come to know me by my drink.

I get to work and Matt is waiting outside which is unusual. He lets Bailey out of the back and opens my door and asks me how I am today and I think it's all just too much, too early in the morning. I stayed up reading Wicked last night without the benefit of my glasses and now I've got a pounding headache. He takes his coffee, thanks me, and we start the day.

When I sit at my desk I finish a sketch I did yesterday as a warm up and look over the blue line drawings I've got to finish today. It should be a good day today, even for a Tuesday. Even for February.

I have decided not to post on weekends. For one thing I am not near my computer so technically I can't post, and for another I don't do much book focused artwork.

Here is a panel from the first Fenway Park scene. I played around with color a bit and, although my palette isn't popping the way I'd like it to, I think the trees look cool. Duck! will probably be in black and white -for one thing it's cheaper and for another color takes For EVER to do. And doing all this by myself I don't have luxury of time.

What I would like to have is the luxury of a colorist.

The Freshly Pick'd Pattern

Yesterday Alex's partner Jess had her baby. A beautiful baby boy named Jake. And I got thinking about the interconnectedness of life and The Pattern of things.

I went to see Callie's Show last night (The Deja's) at Toad, a bar in Cambridge on Mass Ave. and the performance was great, the crowd was a nice mix of gay and urban straight and (touchingly) Callie's parents were there right up front supporting her.

There's something about a cute lesbian playing a guitar isn't there? On February 21st, 2008 there were relatively few places I would rather have been. It was just what I needed. So, my advice? Next time you're feeling the pull of the freshly eclipsed moon, grab a close friend (Alia in my case) head to some local dive bar and support the local music scene. It'll do wonders for the pattern that applies only to you.

Dance, Dance!

I've got to start fleshing out this club scene that I know will be very tricky visually. I secretly think it's beyond me. But, I'll push myself and hopefully end up with some energetic wildly free movement scenes. I guess we'll see. Here's a sketch to start things off...

Hump Day

I've been giving a lot of thought lately to birthdays and anniversaries. Matthew turned 44 on the 4th and according to Morgan Llewellyn 4 can be a weak number. But three 4s? I'm sure that's got something to it. It's the season of the Pisces and according to my pocket zodiac which means I should try to go with the flow. Aphrodite and her son, Eros escaped a terrible fate by turning themselves into fish and tying themselves together with a string so they wouldn't get lost which is where we get the modern image of Pisces.
Here, Cat's reminding me the start of red sox season is only a few short weeks (months) away.

Early Church

This one of the earliest designs for Church
